Google Instant – Good Or Bad For SEO

by David Hawke on September 10, 2010

If you haven’t noticed, (You probably have), Google now shows you multiple search pages when you type a search. Go ahead, give it a try. Wait! Read the rest of this article and then go give it a try.

Their hope is that by doing this they will show you the search page you are looking for, before you get it completely typed in.

Online telepathy comes to my mind, I wonder what Google would show for that search.

Ok, I did the search, I typed “online telpa” What is funny here it that I missed the second “E” when typing it and Google still knew what I was looking for. I’m not really sure what to make of that, it is interesting though. Seriously, can they read my thoughts?

Google claims to want to be the third part of our brain, whether you like it or not, I think they’ve come pretty close.

So, now the reason I decided to write this article.

google instant - good or bad for seo

Google Instant - Good or Bad?

Is Google instant going to be good or bad for Search Engine Optimization. Some are speculating that it’ll be bad because now people are going to see multiple pages as they type a search term.

I haven’t heard anyone speculate that it’ll be good for SEO, but my thoughts are this.

It could be good, because now you can begin typing a phrase and you can see what the most common search phrases on the internet are. That could be a handy piece of information for the artistic SEO consultant like me.

On the other hand, will the rest of the keywords and phrases lose their worth because people abandon their original search for something Google thinks they want?

I don’t believe this will be an issue. If you’re looking for “online telepathy” and google starts you out in online games there is no relevance. So my thought is that people will still get to what they are searching for, they may just get their faster and without having to make all the key strokes they had to make a few days ago.

Many SEO companies will try to “game Google” or in other words trick Google into showing a website.

The lesson here is that gaming Google is probably not your best bet. (They will catch up to you). But if you are honestly trying to help people and your content is relevant to the search’s people are making, you’re website will be the winner and show up when people are looking for it.

So that’s my observation and thought. Do you agree or disagree? Leave a comment below, I’d like to hear it.
